This sign hangs above Tunnel Road at the South end. According to one local historian, the reason the tunnel was built was to cut down the Prince Regent's journey length to his mistress near Brighton down to less than 50 miles from London, in keeping with his commitment to the King as Regent. Whatever, it was England's first tunnel road and now home to Farmers' markets and French foods at regular intervals. CLOSE
